Psalm 81:10: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.” C.S. Lewis writes in The Weight of Glory that we are “far too easily pleased.” What an invitation from God. Yet, what do I do? Look down at the ground. Worry about this. Worry about that. Walk by sight and not by faith. Oh Lord, what a pitiful creature I can be. You say, “How much of Me do you want?” And I say, “Lord, what about X? What about Y?” Have mercy, Lord. We truly are pitiful creatures, wanting to go on making mud pies when a day at the beach has been offered (Lewis again, paraphrased).
Confession vs Repentance: I heard a pastor say once that we are a “confessional church” in America but not a repentance one. We confess sin, but we don’t turn the other way (the true meaning of repentence). While this is surely not true of all, I think that it is true for many. Do you merely confess sin? Or do you mourn, grieve, weep, hate, and do all that you can to return from the sin that “so easily entangles” (Hebrews 12:1). Oh the joy of repentance. A creature…nothing more.
Oswald Chambers Strikes Again: One of the only devotionals that I have found worth reading is still My Utmost For His Highest. It will comfort your heart while punching you in the gut. It doesn’t water down the Gospel. Here it is: take it or leave it. The devotion for the other day was titled, “Does He Know Me?”
