#143 We Shape Technology; Technology Then Shapes Us

Technology: Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids! Let us not fall into the temptation of thinking that we merely create and use technology. The various forms of technology that we use are shaping us. Yes, they are shaping us, literally changing our character, behavior, and attitudes for better or for worse. So which is it? Granted, there are many benefits to technology when properly used. For example, technology can help us be and live much more efficiently. There is a time for this. However, efficiency demands moderation or else it can become, using biblical language, an idol. An obsession with great efficiency can also result in an efficiency mindset that cannot tolerate being interrupted. What place is left for the random good deed or the spontaneous encounter? If we are not careful, the person that technology produces will be a far cry from Jesus Christ who was compassionate, sometimes slow-moving, patient, and people-centered. Jesus’ ultimate goal was not to be efficient but to do the Father’s will, and this sometimes meant enjoying a wedding, resting, getting alone to pray, etc. So while most forms of technology are neither intrinsically good nor evil, they are shaping us and we are foolish to live unaware of this existential fact. It is paramount for Christians to keep this at the forefront of their mind.

I remember a few years back when someone in my family posted “Happy Birthday” on my Facebook page. But they didn’t call. They were close enough to me that I expected more than a FB post. I was disappointed and immediately thought of the “cost” of technology. It provides easier methods of communication, yet these can be less personal. What did I do? I went into my settings and made it so that people cannot post on my FB page. Granted, someone can still send a private message, but even this feels a little different (but not much). Again, if we are not careful, technology will change us, making us the kind of people who do not want to be inconvenienced since easier, more efficient options are available.

Let’s push back!

I would add that local congregations can also succumb to this toxic mindset as a body of believers.

On this note, I am excited to start reading this book soon!
