Ask Yourself This Question

One of the books in my office right now is John Maxwell’s The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader. Years ago, I read a lot about leadership. I have not for the last several years. However, our roles and positions morph over time and I have recently become more interested in reading, learning, and growing as a leader. I found this book at a thrift store and bought it for around one dollar. It has definitely proven to be worth it already.

That said, I want to share one question that I found interesting and rewarding. It is in the chapter about commitment. Maxwell writes:

If it came down to it, what in life would you not be able to stop doing, no matter what the consequences were?

Immediately, I thought of writing. Whether people read what I write or not, I can’t stop. It is a passion. It is planted so deeply in me that to deny it would be to deny a part of me. I have also noticed that in most cases, a quiet sadness grows in my heart when I am not writing. This does not mean that I write every day, but it does mean that neglecting this for an extended amount of time takes a mental and emotional toll on me.

What about you?

Ask yourself this question and see what comes to mind. If nothing immediately comes to mind, then sit with the question a bit. It is worth it!
