I have become a huge fan of Cal Newport. For those who do “knowledge work,” his books, articles, and podcasts are valuable. The book Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World is the one that put him on the map, so to speak. With Father’s Day fast approaching and my wife asking me what I want, I have finally decided:
- Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World
- Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout
He makes the distinction in Deep Work between “shallow work” which keeps the lights on in an organization and “deep work” which “moves the needle.”
So, my next read is Slow Productivity.
For those interested, I am reading the following right now:
- Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics
- Plato’s Republic (with my son)
- Henri Nouwen’s The Living Reminder (Wow!)
- The Secret Garden (with my kids at night before bed)
