A Bonhoeffer Quote: My copy of Discipleship arrived in the mail. It is part of a 17-volume set. I currently only have this book. It contains much of the material in The Cost of Discipleship. I have underlined several statements, but one struck me and left me wondering. Bonhoeffer seeks to cut past the human-imposed layers that are stacked on top of pure Christianity. He wants to free Jesus and his pure word so that it stands alone. Then, and only then, can a person have the gift of making a genuine choice for or against Christ.

Here is the quote that struck me and that I shared with a few people today: “It is also our opinion that if Jesus himself and Jesus alone with his word were among us in our preaching, then quite a different set of people would hear the word and quite a different set of people would again turn away from it.”

Oh my.
