Why I Blog

Tim Challies is a Reformed Christian, pastor, author, and blogger. Interestingly, I read this about him the other day: “Long after it was cool, Tim Challies kept blogging.” This resonated with me because I really enjoy blogging. Not only did it resonate, it put words to something that I have felt without articulating for some time: blogs are not as popular as they once were (understatement?).

Podcasts.

Videos/Vlogs.

Instagram.

TikTok.

Other forms of social media.

The list goes on. People want to watch and listen.

So why keep blogging? Why keep using a medium that is potentially dated, out of style, and will potentially cost me followers?

The answer for me is simple: I love to write.

That’s it.

At 17 years of age, C.S. Lewis wrote to his friend Arthur Greeves on May 30, 1916: “Whenever you are fed up with life, start writing: ink is the great cure for all human ills, as I have found out long ago.” I still find it mind-blowing that he wrote this at such a young age.

For me, writing is comfort. At times, joy. At other times, peace. It helps me. It helps me breathe. Granted, any writer experiences great frustration at times, but this pales in comparison with the joy of it.

So while I sometimes think I’m wasting my time that might be better spent doing a podcast or something else, I can’t stop. I don’t want to.

I love to write.

I need to write.

It’s therapy for someone like me.

What do you love to do? What is that thing that if you didn’t do, you would be miserable?
